When a good friend dies
an eagle takes flight across the moor
an Irish whistle tune lilts beneath the hill
a whisky glass glints gold by the fire
when a good friend dies

The cage that held his spirit confined
now burst, he makes his sculptures in the air
he paints his pictures on the darkness of our dreams
his saga's now the weft of our memories
when a good friend dies

Let's treasure him for we are all enriched
by remembered days of light, now wrapped and sealed
—and so this sudden darkness, eclipse—
when a good friend dies

So raise a glass of malt and strum the chords
of a favourite song to bring his memory near
and celebrate this fleeting joy of life
when a good friend dies
