yesterday I picked my way along the shore
and some shape released a memory of you dying

out of nowhere the dark waters tugged
I felt the colossal heave that carried you away

the infinity of your shipwreck yawned
among the commonplace of an ordinary day
and I remembered how your body looked
carved by its crossing of an ocean
then tossed up as driftwood
weightless, bleached

today the waves brought fresh wreckage
further up the beach
and took away what they yesterday revealed
